Our Beliefs About Malay Language Learning
We believe that every student can be nurtured into an effective communicator and self-directed learner who is passionate about the Malay Language, appreciates their cultural heritage, and uses the language confidently in authentic everyday contexts.
The Core Curriculum
The Malay Language Curriculum comprises teaching and learning experiences that promote an active and engaging learning environment. The strategies employed are designed to encourage students to explore language concepts in authentic and meaningful contexts, with an emphasis on interactive and communicative competencies. Through collaborative discussions, inquiry-based learning, and reflective practices, students are nurtured to develop E21CC competencies such as effective communication, self-directed learning, critical thinking, and social awareness.
Recognising that every student learns differently, differentiated instruction is incorporated through activities and exercises that cater to students’ interests, readiness levels, and aptitudes. Formative assessment practices are also integrated to monitor students’ progress, encourage reflection on learning, and support the development of confident and responsible learners.
Key Programmes
The Core Curriculum is further enhanced through key programmes that foster a conducive environment for the development of language skills in a fun and exploratory manner. These programmes embody our belief that the Malay Language is a living language — one that is used meaningfully in everyday communication across various contexts by students who are articulate, confident, and passionate about their Mother Tongue Language. Through authentic and meaningful learning experiences, students are also provided with opportunities to develop E21CC competencies such as communication, collaboration, cultural awareness, and self-directed learning.
The Key Programmes in SBPS are:
MTL SOAR Programme
The MTL SOAR Programme aims to nurture students’ love for reading in the Mother Tongue Language through meaningful and enjoyable reading experiences. Through the programme, students discover that reading can be a “seated adventure” — sparking creativity and imagination, broadening perspectives, opening pathways to new discoveries, and exposing them to rich vocabulary and expressions.
Through activities such as individual reading, storytelling, role play, book discussions, and shared reading experiences with peers and family members, students develop positive reading habits and confidence as bilingual readers. The programme also fosters a strong culture of reading beyond the classroom while strengthening E21CC competencies such as communication, self-directed learning, and critical thinking.
Reading Mum Programme
The Reading Mum Programme provides additional support for students who require assistance in developing their Mother Tongue Language reading skills. Conducted during curriculum hours, the programme provides students with dedicated reading support in a caring and encouraging environment through the support of parent volunteers. During the 30-minute sessions, students engage in guided reading activities that help to build confidence, strengthen literacy skills, and cultivate positive reading habits. The programme also fosters meaningful school-home partnerships while nurturing students to become more confident and independent readers.
Authentic Communication Programme
This programme provides Primary 5 students with opportunities to use the Malay Language in authentic and meaningful contexts through digital and media-based learning experiences. They engage in activities such as creating vlogs, sharing reviews, and promoting products or experiences in the style of digital influencers. Through these tasks, students develop confidence, creativity, and communicative competencies while strengthening E21CC skills such as effective communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and self-directed learning.
Cultural Awareness Programme
The annual Cultural Camp provides Primary 3 students with an immersive and experiential learning journey that deepens their appreciation of Malay culture and heritage. Through authentic cultural experiences such as traditional games, food preparation, dikir barat, and batik painting, students engage meaningfully with the traditions and practices of the Malay community. These experiences foster a stronger sense of cultural identity and appreciation while nurturing E21CC competencies such as social awareness, collaboration, and effective communication.
Cultural Performance Programme
The annual Cultural Performance Programme for Primary 4 students provides enriching learning experiences that deepen their appreciation and love for the Malay Language. Through exposure to local Malay cultural performances, students are immersed in authentic arts experiences beyond the classroom. These experiences broaden their cultural understanding, strengthen their connection to the Malay Language, and foster E21CC competencies such as cultural awareness, reflection, and communication.
