Our Belief
We believe that learning Tamil is more than acquiring a language; it is a meaningful journey that connects students to their culture, heritage, and identity. Tamil language learning in SBPS is made engaging, interactive, and enjoyable so that students develop confidence in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Through authentic experiences, creative activities, and collaborative learning, students can strengthen their communication, critical thinking, and creative expression skills. We believe every student can learn and appreciate Tamil when provided with a supportive and encouraging environment. By nurturing a love for the language, we hope to inspire lifelong learners who value and use Tamil with pride in their daily lives.
The Core Curriculum
The Tamil core curriculum focuses on creating an active, meaningful, and engaging learning environment for all students. A variety of teaching and learning activities are planned to encourage students to participate actively and explore language concepts through authentic and real-life experiences. Lessons are designed to make learning enjoyable while helping students develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
Tamil Reading Club
The programme aims to develop students’ interest in speaking Tamil and improve their language skills. It also encourages students to share their thoughts and ideas confidently while developing imagination, communication skills, and a deeper appreciation for books and stories. Through various activities, students will develop their critical and creative thinking skills while enjoying a collaborative reading experience with their peers.
Mother Tongue Fortnight Activities
P1 - Puppet Storytelling
Primary 1 students were introduced to the joy of storytelling through engaging puppet stories. After listening to the stories, students had the opportunity to use the puppets to share their own ideas, thoughts, and simple conversations. This hands-on activity helped to build their confidence in speaking and encouraged creativity and imagination in learning their Mother Tongue language.
P2 - Speech & Drama
Tamil Language Speech & Drama for Primary 2 pupils was a fun and engaging activity designed to help students build confidence in speaking Tamil through role-play, and simple drama performances. It helped students to improve their vocabulary and develop expressive communication skills in an enjoyable and interactive environment. Through group activities and short performances, students also strengthened their creativity, teamwork, and self-confidence while developing a deeper appreciation for the Tamil language and culture.
P3 - Tamil Language Camp
The Tamil Language Camp for Primary 3 students was a fun and enriching experience that allowed students to learn more about Tamil culture through hands-on activities and performances. Students explored traditional block printing, played the traditional game of kabadi, learnt kolattam, a traditional folk dance from South India, and participated in drama activities. The camp provided students with opportunities to actively engage in cultural learning while strengthening their communication skills, cooperation, and enthusiasm for learning Tamil in an enjoyable environment.
P3 / P4 - Games to Develop Cognitive Skills
This is specially designed for students to have a different perspective of mother tongue language. Students will get to learn and enjoy specially-tailor-made brain exercises in Tamil that incorporates culture and language-based activities. It is designed to stimulate cognitive skills such as memory, pattern recognition, cognitive flexibility and attention.
P4 - Comic Writing
The objective of this activity is to help students express moral values creatively through comic writing while improving their language, thinking, and storytelling skills. Pupils greatly enjoyed the activity, and their creativity was clearly reflected in the work they produced. It was a fun and engaging experience that encouraged imagination and creative expression.
P4 Regional Library Visit
The annual library visit for Primary 4 students aims to cultivate a love for reading and encourage independent learning. During the visit, students are introduced to a wide variety of books, library resources, and reading programmes. They learn how to borrow books responsibly and make effective use of library facilities. The visit helps to improve stydents’ reading habits, language skills, and general knowledge. It also nurtures curiosity, creativity, and confidence in exploring information independently, supporting their overall learning and personal development.
P5 /P6 - Short Film Making
The Short Film Making Workshop provided students with an exciting opportunity to explore the process of creating a short film from start to finish. Students were given a glimpse into developing a story, writing scripts, planning scenes, and taking on roles such as directors and actors while recording their films. The activity also encouraged students to express their ideas confidently and work together as a team to bring their stories to life. Students greatly enjoyed the workshop as it was a new and enriching experience for them.
